Thoughts on Marriage

So I'm giving a speech at Karen's wedding on Saturday. I spent my lunch today pondering marriage and searching for some good advice. Here is what I found. Feel free to add your own marriage advice by leaving me a comment!

WHY MARRIAGE?
~ By: Mari Nichols-Haining ~

Because to the depths of me, I long to love one person,
With all my heart, my soul, my mind, my body...

Because I need a forever friend to trust with the intimacies of me,
Who won't hold them against me,
Who loves me when I'm unlikable,
Who sees the small child in me, and
Who looks for the divine potential of me...

Because I need to cuddle in the warmth of the night
With someone who thanks God for me,
With someone I feel blessed to hold...

Because marriage means opportunity
To grow in love in friendship...

Because marriage is a discipline
To be added to a list of achievements...

Because marriages do not fail, people fail
When they enter into marriage
Expecting another to make them whole...

Because, knowing this,
I promise myself to take full responsibility
For my spiritual, mental and physical wholeness
I create me,
I take half of the responsibility for my marriage
Together we create our marriage...

Because with this understanding
The possibilities are limitless.

Promise

Promise to give the best of yourself
and ask of the other no more than they can give.

Promise to respect your partner as their own person
and to realize that their interests, desires and needs are no less important then your own.

Promise to share your time and attention and to bring
joy, strength and imagination to the relationship.

Promise to keep yourself open
to let the other see through the window of your world into your innermost fears and feelings, secrets and dreams.

Promise to grow together.
To be willing to face changes in order to keep the relationship alive and exciting.

Promise to love in good times and in bad,
with all you have to give and all you feel inside in the only way you know how - completely and forever.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You can give without loving,
but you can never love without giving.
The great acts of love are done by those
who are habitually performing small acts of kindness.
We pardon to the extent that we love.
Love is knowing that even when you are alone,
you will never be lonely again.
And great happiness of life is the conviction
that we are loved.
Loved for ourselves.
And even loved in spite of ourselves.
